A report published Monday detailed “systemic” verbal abuse and sexual misconduct by coaches at the highest levels of women’s soccer in the United States, and found that leaders in the United States Soccer Federation, the National Women’s Soccer League and throughout American soccer had failed to act over the years on reports from players.

In a separate statement, Claudio Reyna acknowledged sending messages to U.S. soccer officials about his son’s limited playing time during the World Cup. But he denied making threats. He said he would never do anything to threaten anyone.
The U.S. Soccer Federation hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the Berhalter incident when it learned of the allegation in December.

On Wednesday, team officials announced they had appointed an interim head coach while the investigation continued. Anthony Hudson was previously an assistant for the men’s team. He will lead the squad for the two international friendly games this month.

Berhalter is still available for rehiring, pending the completion of the investigation and review. “We have agreed we need to let the investigation play out before we can make any determinations there,” said JT Batson, the organization’s CEO and secretary general.
“The intention of this statement is to provide transparency and to reinforce that a single bad decision made by a teenager does not necessarily define him for the rest of his life. We will not hide from this. We didn’t then, and we won’t now.”
It was concluded in the statement that they were embracing the opportunity to share how they have grown and learned from this over the past 31 years.
The Federation did not have to conduct a proper assessment of the coach before his contract ended due to the unique November- December timing of the World Cup.
