The US was knocked out in the Women’s World Cup

What happened to the first U.S. women’s world cup victory in Sweden – and how it happened in the first matchup at the WWC

Sweden will take on Japan in the quarterfinals. The U.S., the number one team in the world and two-time defending Women’s World Cup champions, heads home.

I am sure we were criticized for the way we played. [in this tournament],” U.S. Coach Andonovski said in a Fox Sports post-game interview. We came out today and showed what we are all about. The strength, the resilience, the bravery. Unfortunately, soccer can be cruel sometimes.”

O’Hara’s kick went off the post in the last minute of extra time. It would come down to the person who was closest to the situation. Her shot was swatted by Naeher and somehow passed across the line.

The drama really started when that happened. She made her Women’s World Cup debut in the final minute of extra time. She made her first touch on the penalty shot.

The U.S. began the second half how it ended the first. Controlling play and crafting offensive opportunities. In the 53rd minute, a strike that Swedish keeper Zemira Muovi was supposed to save was somehow diverted out of the goal.

The U.S. won three times in a shootout at the Women’s World Cup. The U.S. offense has never faced a keeper like Sweden’s Zuira Muovi, who was brilliant in stop after stop to keep the squad from scoring.

So despite the U.S. dominance during regulation, neither side scored — which forced a half-hour of extra time. In the 99th minute, the U.S. decided to replace Alex Morgan with Megan Rapinoe. Both sides had chances in extra time – but they didn’t score.

It was easily the best first half for the U.S. at this tournament – as the Americans dissected Sweden’s defense to create one scoring chance after another. But at the half-time break, it was not a factor. This was the U.S. team that was missing in the first three matches.

It was the seventh time these two squads faced each other at the WWC – the most in tournament history. Though this is their first-ever matchup in a knockout round. Going in, the U.S. had a 4W-1D-1L record.

The United States Women’s National Team was ousted from the tournament in a cruel way. It came by the smallest of margins. An inch. Maybe less.

“All we want to do is be successful, be able to uphold the legacy that this team deserves. We failed at that this time,” said forward Alex Morgan, who like Rapinoe was playing in her fourth World Cup. I’m not giving up on the team’s future. I still stand by that. The game is evolving and getting better, that’s not going to change. It’s only going to continue.”

In the end, however, the United States struggled most with its identity. It could never muster the confidence of teams past — including the legendary ’99ers.

The Future Is Uncertain for the U.S. After Ccrashing Out of the Women’s World Cup: A Conversation with Catarina Macario

Dynamic forward Catarina Macario, hailed among the future stars of the team, tore her ACL last year playing with French club Lyon and didn’t recover in time.

The team’s top scorer,Mallory Swanson, had to have her knee repaired in an exhibition match with Ireland. In June, the team’s captain announced that she could not play in the tournament because of a foot injury.

We should be proud that those days are behind us. The growth of this game globally has always been fought for by the members of the U.S. women’s national team.

Rapinoe, the outspoken star on the 2019 World Cup known for her iconic victory pose, wasn’t the same game-changer she once was. At 38, and after a pair of World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal, her role had diminished. She said that the World Cup would be her last.

There was a backlash on social media after the match, critical of Andonovski’s tactics and Rapinoe’s reaction after she missed her penalty attempt. She explained later that she had expected to make it.

“Even though it didn’t end up the way we wanted, it’s a huge experience for some of these young players,” Andonovski said. There are some players that will make a mark.

Smith had two goals in the first game against Vietnam, but went without a goal for the rest of the tournament. She missed her attempt at a penalty against Sweden.

One player, midfielder Savannah DeMelo, had never appeared in a national team match when she was named to the World Cup roster. She started in the first two games of the World Cup after coming in as a substitute in the send off against Wales.

After the disappointing game in Tokyo, there were changes to the U.S. system. The focus was on developing young players, like Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman.

“I never came into the job, never came into the locker room with the mindset that I wanted to do something to save my job,” Andonovski said on Sunday, clearly shaken. I was always focused on doing a good job, preparing this team well for the challenges that will be in front of them, and preparing them to represent our country.

The Americans won the World Cup in 2015 and ’19 under Andonovski, who was then named the new coach. He has gone 51-5-9 during his time with the team.

The coach’s future with the team is uncertain after a bronze medal at the Olympics and an early exit from the World Cup.

“I think it says a lot about the growth of the game,” defender Crystal Dunn said. Many people are looking for us to win games at the World Cup.

Women’s soccer is growing at a faster rate than the Americans. The United States, Germany and Brazil were sent back to their countries early, while teams like Jamaica, Colombia and first-timers Morocco exceeded expectations.

The U.S. team’s success in the 1999 World Cup is what made it the top ranked team in the world. The Americans beat China on penalties in front of a sellout crowd at the Rose Bowl and Brandi Chastain doffed her jersey in celebration.
