Mac McClung: The Most Admired Basketball Player in the World During a G League Dunk Contest – A Night in the Life
Mac McClung was not on the NBA roster five days ago, as he was playing for the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League.
He became the most recognized basketball player in the world on Saturday when he was crowned NBA Slam Dunk champion, scoring a perfect 50 for three of his four dunks and signing a two-way contract with the 76ers.
“The crowd was really amazing tonight,” McClung told CNN’s Andy Scholes afterwards. It was a blessing. It’s really cool man. I will brag about it to my kids one day. The ultimate goal is to play in the NBA. I will work every day. I’m very hungry and I’m resilient so I’m gonna keep working.”
McCaul jumped over his friend sitting on another friend’s shoulders, grabbed the ball out of his hands, sank a reverse slam and received a perfect 50 from the judges.
Such incredible dunks from the 6ft 2in guard drew the admiration of NBA legends, as he became the shortest player since 1986 to rack up three perfect scores, according to ESPN.
Damian was wearing a jersey with his alma mater’s name on it and won the three-point contest. The hometown Utah Jazz trio of Jordan Clarkson, Walker Kessler, and Collin Sexton won the skills challenge.
The point guard who was just called up from the G League for the 76ers was the star of the night. He bungeed his frame up to the net in every round of the dunk contest.
Who is he? A group of basketball celebrities quickly became his hype crew on the sidelines, filming him with sponsored phones and almost dropping their own children. The dunk contest gave the world a peek into what they’ve known for a long time.
So, what now? One night took the 24-year-old from a YouTube star to a household name. The internet is still recovering from the spectacle and there are still “Who is Mac McClure?” articles being written.
