The Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals in a Game of the Eagles: A Game-by-Even Success for a Superbowl Winner
The Kansas City Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl after a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals for the American Football Conference Championship on Sunday.
Three weeks ago, he sustained an ankle injury against Jacksonville and has been affected ever since. He said that they would see how close he was to 100% on game day.
On fourth down, Burrow heaved the ball down the field and found Ja’Marr Chase for a 35-yard strike to move Cincinnati deep into Kansas City territory. Two plays later, the Bengals scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Samaje Perine to tie the game yet again.
This contest was evenly matched. The Eagles andKCs were the two best teams in the league, as ranked by their conferences. They had identical records (16-3) and both had each scored 546 points. Philadelphia was a slight favorite to win the Super Bowl.
The Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Chiefs: A Game in the Life of Two Pros (The Chiefs vs. the Eagles)
Brock Purdy was the starter for the 49ers and was hurt in the first quarter when he was hit by the Eagles’ Haason Reddick. Josh Johnson, who is the fourth string quarterback, started for Purdy until he was ruled out of the game with a concussion in the third quarter.
Hurts is in just his second season as a full-time starter. The Houston Texas native has had an MVP-caliber season, leading the team to a dominant 16-1 in games he started and finishing with an impressive 3,701 yards in the air with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, along with 760 yards and 13 scores on the ground.
This year’s matchup is a battle of heavyweights. Both teams finished the season with a 14-3 record. Both of them were the top seeds in their conference. And now, both have won two playoff games to arrive here in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs have the best offense in the league, and they have a presumptive Most Valuable Player in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Eagles have the most complete team in football and overcoming their league-leading defense will be difficult.
The Philadelphia Eagles were the class of the NFL all season. The only loss they have had was when their starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts, had six turnovers.
Their defense is formidable: Their pass rush is second to none, and overall, they allowed the second fewest yards of any team this year. On offense, they’re much improved from last season. Hurts was already a running threat and has now made big strides in his passing game, and the addition of star receiver A.J. Brown has transformed their ability for explosive plays.
Kansas City had the best offense in the league. This is true no matter which way you slice it, be it the simplest measures (the Chiefs were #1 in points scored and #1 in yards gained in the regular season), or the stats cited only by analytics nerds (their offensive expected points added per play, 0.17, was almost double the second-place team).
And their defense has perked up from years past, led by All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who, as much as it is possible for one player to do so in a football game, singlehandedly dominated the Chiefs’ previous matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Eagles have an imposing pass rush. Their pass rush, led by linebacker Haason Reddick, a dark horse Super Bowl MVP candidate, is the best in the league at getting to the other team’s quarterback. The percentage of plays in which the team sacked the quarterback was the highest in decades. In the second quarter of the game, Reddick shed his blocker and reached out to reach San Francisco’s quarterback, Brock Purdy, who was forced to leave the game with an injured elbow.
This is a problem for the Kansas City Chiefs as their tackles, who have struggled this season, are the lowest ranked of the five. If the Eagles can get by them on a regular basis, they could force the Chiefs to move the ball and fail to find a rhythm.
When Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts and Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes take the field on Sunday, it will be the first time ever that two black quarterbacks will face off in a Super Bowl.
This week, Hurts, who is Black, and Mahomes, who is Hispanic, spoke about the history of the game and how long it takes to integrate the position. More about that history can be found here.
Hurts sprained his throwing shoulder toward the end of the regular season, causing him to miss two games, both of which the Eagles lost. He’s since struggled with the deep ball — although both of the Eagles’ playoff wins were so decisive that it didn’t much matter.
The Mannings-Watts Tributed to their Mom and Dad at the Colosseum in the ’94 Super Bowl
The Mannings and Watts are two famous pairs of brothers who played in the National Football League but never squared off in the Super Bowl.
Both players are the best in their positions. Both guys are popular with their fans. Their mom, Donna Kelce, wears a custom half-red, half-green jersey with Travis’ #87 on the front and Jason’s #62 on the back. She brought cookies with her to the media day.
The brothers had their mom and dad on their podcast talk about what they were like as kids. Who was more honest? Which kind of food did they eat? Who is the favorite? It’s all exceptionally wholesome.

The Philadelphia Eagles vs the Kansas City Chiefs: What’s Happening Tonight at the LHC? On the Rise and Fall of Rihanna
This year is the only one where you will see the halftime performer. She turned down the job because of Colin Kaepernick. Brittany Luse of It’s Been A Minute and Gene Demby of Code Switch talk about if there have been fixes to Rihanna’s issues and why she should step up to the mic. And, in anticipation of the halftime show, check out WBEZ’s Making Rihanna series, which looks at the Barbadian national hero’s rise to stardom.
The team’s 2020 victory party indicates that it will be quite a celebration in Kansas City if the team won the Vince Lombardi trophy this year. Check out highlights from the 2020 parade here. Either way.

Mahomes, Brady, and Kelce: Two brothers to win a Super Bowl and two Super Bowls with the Cleveland Heights duo
They were the top seeds in their conferences. Both have a record of 16-3. Both had scored more than 500 points by this point. Both of them have six All-Pros. And, both have a Kelce brother.
Beyond their mission on the field, the two stars serve as inspiration for younger generations of football fans seeking a more inclusive version of one of the United States’ most beloved sports.
At less than two years old, Mahomes has already accomplished a lot, winning the Super Bowl and being two-time league Most Valuable Player. Tom Brady was the first quarterback to start in three Super Bowls in their first six seasons, and he joined him this year.
He was let go after the 2012 season, when the team finished with a dismal 4-12 record. He has won at least 10 games in all but one season.
If either of them wins the second Super Bowl, they will become the first brothers to square off on the biggest stage in the history of football.
The Cleveland Heights duo has had a dream of sharing this experience. They were football teammates at the University of Cincinnati.
Travis is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time All-Pro, widely recognized for his flashy dance moves and exuberant personality. He has been a six-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro, and he is a workhorse on the offensive line.

How to watch the big game from the field: The Eagles take a lead in the second half of the first game at State Farm Stadium
This Sunday you can see who captures the biggest prize in football. The action kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona. This is how to watch from wherever you are.
The Eagles opened the game doing what they’ve done all season long: marched 75-yards down the field in 11 plays using a mix of passing, scrambling and rushing to score the opening touchdown (a Jalen Hurts QB sneak) just 4:51 into the first quarter.
Kansas City didn’t do much with its next possession. Philadelphia wanted to extend the lead. But Jalen Hurts made a rare mistake fumbling the ball — the Eagles first turnover of the postseason — as he tried to evade a tackler. The score was 14 with the Chiefs going to the end zone to tie it.
While 73,000+ people in State Farm Stadium in Arizona saw the halftime show, the Kansas City coaching staff had to make changes to their offense to slow down the Eagles.
