A Three Hour Sports Anchor and Reporter in the Waterloo Plains and Its Snowing Partly During the Snowpacking Season
As the massive storm system moved across the plains, a sports anchor and reporter for KWWL was pressed into service. It was snowing heavily at times as Mr. Woodley broadcast from the streets of Waterloo for more than three hours.
“What better time to ask the sports guy to come in about five hours earlier than he would normally wake up, go stand out in the wind and the snow and the cold and tell other people not to do the same?” Mr. Woodley told Ryan Witry, an anchor who was back in the warm, dry studio. “I didn’t realize that there was a 3:30 also in the morning until today.”
“I’m used to these evening shows that are only 30 minutes long, and generally on those shows I am inside,” he said in another segment. This is a very long show so watch me grow more crankier and crankier over the course of a couple hours.
Can I go back to doing my regular job? He held it at another moment. “I’m pretty sure you guys added an extra hour to this hour just because somebody likes torturing me.”
Is it possible for fans to pivot from sports to weather? And how did Woodley and his family manage to survive during the Superstorm?
Woodley said that he “didn’t even realize” the channel had a 3:30 a.m. slot – and he didn’t find out he’d be covering that slot until the night before.
He said he thought if he brought a little attitude to it, viewers would pay attention. “It’s a very serious storm,” he said, and emphasized the importance of “making sure people know what they need to do to be safe.”
“It was my sister-in-law who said ‘you gotta tweet this,’” he said. I put it on the internet because I thought 15-20 people would see it and my managers wouldn’t care. Within hours I get these text messages saying, ” dude, you go viral, Judd aApatow likes you.”), or something like that.
Is it possible for fans to call for him to pivot from sports to weather? He said that was his absolute nightmare. We are shorthanded and that is why I was in this situation.

What has a great guy (about Paul Woodley) done with KWWL, and what has he done in his 20-plus years with the WZNBA?
He said that he was a team player. I would do it, but that would be my absolute nightmare. I hope to God they do not ask me to ever do that again.”
Can I return to my regular job? I’m pretty sure, Ryan, you guys added an extra hour to the show just because somebody likes torturing me,” he said. “Compared to two and a half hours ago it is just getting colder and colder.”
In an interview, Mr. Woodley, who has worked at KWWL on and off for 20 years, said that the previous 24 hours had “been insane” and that the response had been overwhelmingly positive, including from his employer.
The whole thing was incredible, and I don’t understand how celebrities do things. “It’s exhausting. I love it because it is new for me, but I have never seen anything like this before.
He did 14 live stand-ups over three and a half hours and chose the funniest parts to post on social media. He decided to put it on the social networking site despite being encouraged by his friends and family to not. The next thing he knew, the director Judd Apatow and the actor Josh Gad were retweeting him.
He joked that he was on air and said they knew who he was because they knew who he was. He said the station has been on.
Mr. Woodley managed to talk his way out of doing a second round of coverage on Friday morning and instead planned to return to his regular 6 p.m. time slot to preview the Music City Bowl in which the University of Iowa will play the University of Kentucky in Nashville next weekend.
I was excited to not be that guy again, and if the good Lord is willing, I will not do it again,” he said. However, if his team is short-handed, as was the case this week, he said he would grudgingly step in.
