Angel Reese defended her gesture after theLSU national title win

Angelica Reese: Not When Caitlin Clark criticized me: How much I didn’t know about him? What did she say?

“If you didn’t say it was classless when Caitlin Clark did it to her opponents then don’t say it about Angel Reese either,” tweeted former Baylor quarterback and Heisman winner Robert Lee Griffin III.

Reese could be seen approaching Clark before moving her open hand in front of her face – popularized by WWE star John Cena to mean “you can’t see me” – before pointing to her ring finger in a gesture some interpreted as a reference to the place her newly-acquired championship ring might sit.

Many athletes, commentators and fans are calling out the people who have criticized Reese, questioning why they didn’t take issue with the gesture when Clark did it.

Jose de Jesus Osorio, a Sports journalist, called Reese’s actions “classless” and “idiot”, while Olbermann called him an “idiot”.

I don’t fit in the box that you want me to be in. I’m too hood, I’m too ghetto. You told me that all year. But when other people do it, y’all don’t say nothing,” Reese said. “So this is for the girls that look like me, that want to speak up on what they believe in. It’s undeserving of you. It was a lot larger than me tonight.

This is for the girls that look like me. For those that want to speak up for what they believe in. It’s unapologetically you. That is what I did tonight. It was bigger than me tonight. It’s going to go into rage on a daily basis.

The LSU head coach. They were coached by Kim Mulkey. She’s one of the best basketball coaches of all time, and it shows. She only said kind things to me, so I am very grateful for that too.

I have no idea. I was just trying to spend the last few moments on the court with especially the five people that I’ve started 93 games with and relishing every second of that.”

Why Should We Celebrate Angelique Reese and Caitlin Clark? Social Media Has It Helped Me, or Is It Happening When I’m Getting Sick?

“People hating on Angel Reese or Caitlin Clark. Stop. Unapologetically confident young women should be celebrated NOT hated. Get used to it.

Reese said the negative reaction on social media throughout the season has helped fuel her excellent season, having finished averaging 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds in her first season with LSU after transferring from Maryland.

“Twitter can say what they want to say,” she said. I enjoy reading those comments. All this season I have been the subject of what people have said about me. What’s going to be the thing you say now?

In a game filled with historic firsts and dramatic moments, Louisiana State University beat the University of Iowa in the women’s NCAA tournament final on Sunday.

One of the most-talked about moves happened late in the game and involved two star players, John Cena’s wrestling catchphrase and a social media frenzy.

Both players have been standouts at this year’s March Madness: Reese, 20, was named Most Outstanding Player on Sunday, while 21-year-old Clark — who had already been named 2023 Player of the Year by several associations — broke multiple records at the tournament. She had the most points ever by a woman in the NCAA tournament.

And both players have used the same gesture at this year’s March Madness: Clark waved a hand in front of her face two games earlier when Iowa beat Louisville to enter the Final Four.

Blackistone’s anecdote: Why we cannot see each other, but we can take our own paths.” Reese says she’s not alone in her frustrations

And this is far from the only time that’s happened, Washington Post sports columnist and ESPN panelist Kevin Blackistone told Morning Edition on Monday.

Blackistone said that “we’ve been conditioned to judging behavior by white athletes and Black athletes differently.” This was a new anecdote to share with the qualitative evidence.

The catchphrase has morphed into an even bigger meme in the years since, with people joking now that they literally cannot see Cena. (He correctly predicted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that those quips would flood the YouTube video’s comment section.)

He told Jimmy Fallon last year that when he was working on his 2005 album, his younger brother Sean was “always our litmus test” and never satisfied with any of the songs. He gave a seal of approval to Tony’s move when he heard “The Time is Now,” by bobbing his head in front of his hand.

He showed the head nod versus the hand wave, demonstrating that it wasn’t visible enough. “So I wanted to do this, and the term ‘you cannot see me’ is like, ‘Well, you’re not even on my level’.”

Clark said at a postgame briefing that she had “no idea” that Reese was taunting her, adding that she was “just trying to get to the handshake line and shake hands and be grateful that my team was in that position.”

Reese later doubled down in unapologetic tweets and comments at a postgame press conference, where she said she had faced personal attacks all year for not fitting the narrative.

“We’re all different people with different ways to show our emotions and it’s up to me to control how I do that,” said Iowa head coach Lisablud at the conference.
